Algal Biosensors

Despite their enormous potential, microalgae have until now not been used widely in biotechnology. Particularly the light supply of photoautotrophic organisms in aqueous media remains one of the major obstacles to commercial exploitation.

In cooperation with Algenion GmbH, the Melkonian laboratory develops innovative culture systems for microalgae for biotechnological applications. The novel technology has solved the major technological goals in microalgal biotechnology:

  • effective supply of carbon dioxide
  • stable monoalgal cultures
  • efficient harvesting of algal biomass
  • optimal light supply
  • low mechanical stress
  • cost effectiveness
