Protist turns 100

Founded in 1902 as the Archiv für Protistenkunde by Fritz Schaudinn our journal will be celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. In celebration of this special event we announce the inauguration of the “Fritz Schaudinn Award”. Endowed with US$ 2000, the Fritz Schaudinn Award will be given to the best paper published in volumes 153 and 154 (2002 and 2003) of Protist. The jury will consist of members of the Editorial Board. On this occasion the journal also offers all corresponding authors of original papers published in Protist in volume 153 (2002) a free subscription to the journal for one year. Protist now enters its fifth year of publishing the most exiting and significant research results in all areas of protist research. Its international reputation as a leading journal in the field has been further strengthened. We thank the members of our Editorial Board, our expert reviewers, all authors and subscribers, and everyone in the London, Cologne and Jena offices who have contributed to the success of the journal. In particular, we thank Randall S. Alberte and Peter Upcroft who have resigned from the Editorial Board for their dedication and help during the past two years and we welcome Keith Gull, Eric Meyer, Saul Purton, and Ulrich Sommer as new members on the Editorial Board. We look forward to the next 100 years of research publications about protists in the pages of our journal. Fortunately, much remains to be learned about our little ancestors! January 2002
